Law Enforcement Endorsements
What is Amish Shah's record with law enforcement organizations in his race against Jay Feely?
The Facts
According to Phoenix New Times and Axios Phoenix, three law enforcement organizations—the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Arizona, the Maricopa County Deputies Law Enforcement Association, and the Phoenix Police Sergeants and Lieutenants Association—all selected Amish Shah over Jay Feely as their choice for Congress, and Amish Shah has more law enforcement endorsements than Jay Feely. The organizations cited Amish Shah's strong, bipartisan record of supporting law enforcement officers, voting for public safety, working to keep communities safe, and stopping the flow of fentanyl into communities. Amish Shah attracted police support with his 2022 "yes" vote on a Republican-sponsored bill signed into law by Republican Gov. Doug Ducey that lowered the felony threshold for fentanyl trafficking to nine grams and imposed longer mandatory minimum sentences for possessing smaller amounts of fentanyl.
CLEAA Executive Director Jobe Dickinson said his organization made the decision to endorse Amish Shah for the race because of their proven track record with him, his open-door willingness to meet with them, and his voting record. Phoenix New Times reported that CLEAA represents more than 2,100 law enforcement officers statewide and had also endorsed Shah in 2022. According to Phoenix New Times and Axios Phoenix, CLEAA Executive Director Jobe Dickinson was impressed by Amish Shah's willingness to meet with CLEAA leadership and his introduction of HB2336 in 2023. HB2336 aimed to make family members of officers who died by suicide after being diagnosed with PTSD eligible for Arizona's fallen officer tuition benefit to attend community college or university tuition-free. In a statement to Axios Phoenix, DLEA president Chris Clark said that Amish Shah worked with them to make sure law enforcement officers got the resources and support they need to keep Arizonans safe. Axios Phoenix also reported that Clark applauded Shah for "opposing the defund the police movement."
